The Agriculture Department said Wednesday it aims to produce close to 60 million metric tons of unmilled rice in the next three years as part of the agency’s commitment to attain rice self-sufficiency.
Agriculture Assistant Secretary for Field Operations and National Rice Program director Edilberto de Luna said the DA would target a production of 59.7 million metric tons from 2014 to 2016.
De Luna said the DA should expand the area harvested for rice and increase the yield per hectare to achieve the goal.
Rice production in the first quarter of 2014 stood at 4.3 million metric tons, up 3.28 from 4.17 million MT in the same period last year.
The DA this year is looking at producing 19. 07 million MT of rice, with an average output of 3.95 metric ton per hectare.
For 2015, DA will pursue 20.09 million MT of rice from 4.9 million hectares at a rate of 4.08 MT per hectare.
The DA aims to produce 20.5 million from 4.9 million hectares in 2016 at 4.15 MT per hectare,.
De Luna said Region 3, the country’s rice granary, would continue to be the leading rice- producing region.
The country’s rice stocks continued to drop last month as it fell by 0.3 percent year-on-year, the Philippine Statistics Authority said Wednesday.
PSA in a recent report said the rice stocks inventory as of June 1 this year stood at 2.306 million metric tons from 2.313 million MT in the same period last year.
